    CLAREMONT WOLFCUB INVITATIONAL

    17-18 April 2021

    DEADLINE
    12 April 2021
    ELIGIBILITY
Open to elementary and middle school students only
    PLATFORM
    Online through NSDA Campus

    Information

Please accept our cordial invitation to Claremont High School’s WolfCub Invitational on April 17-18, 2021, a premier competition opportunity for middle school and upper elementary-age students (Grades 4-8). Utilizing the NSDA Campus platform, we look forward to hosting you and your student competitors and providing a great weekend of competition. Below you will find all of the specific details relating to the tournament.

    Events and Divisions
We will offer 2 patterns. Students may enter one event in Pattern A (Debate/Congress) and up to two events in Pattern B (Speech) with the following exception: A student entering Extemporaneous or SPAR may only enter one Pattern B event. To clarify, students may enter up to three events: consisting of one debate event and two speech events. Exceptions: A student entering Extemporaneous or SPAR may only enter one event in the speech pattern; but may still enter one debate event. All debate entrants are guaranteed 5 rounds of competition. Student Congress and Speech will consist of 3 rounds of competition advancing to a finals round. All competitors must have a linked Tabroom account to participate.

    Pattern A Debate Events:
    1. Public Forum Debate: We will use the April PF topic (Varsity High School Topic) and NSDA rules, except that sides will be set by computer and Pro will speak first in all rounds. Resolved: The benefits of the International Monetary Fund outweigh the harms.
    2. Lincoln-Douglas Debate: We will use the March/April LD Topic (Varsity High School Topic) and NSDA rules. Resolved: The United States ought to guarantee universal child care.
    3. Student Congress: We will feature both middle school and elementary divisions. The divisions will be collapsed into one division if either does not reach 14 entries. There will be no presiding officer contest, nor a requirement to bring any POs. We will follow California rules/guidelines. We will use direct examination for questioning, with 30 seconds time blocks for two students. Legislation will be released on March 20th.

    Pattern B Speech Events:
In Speech, we are offering: Oratory, Extemporaneous, Impromptu, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Declamation, SPAR (separate middle school and elementary divisions), and Informative. We will follow NSDA guidelines for the Middle School Speech events. SPAR will use Claremont SPAR Rules, found below. Students may enter up to two speech events in Pattern B. (Exception: SPAR and Extemporaneous may only single enter in Pattern B events.) If entry numbers are low, similar events may be combined. All speech events will be synchronous.

    Awards and Recognition
Awards will be given to all students who advance to the final round of Speech events. All students who advance to the final round of Student Congress will receive awards. The top 8 teams/competitors in each debate division will receive awards unless the entry field is fewer than 16. In this instance, we will award the top 4 in those divisions. There will be Individual Sweepstakes awards (The Wolf Cub Warrior Award) given to the overall top 3 individual competitors. We will also award Team Sweepstakes (The Wolf Cub Cup) to the top three schools/programs.

    Judges
Parents may judge. High School students may also judge. Please note that student judges should be mature 11th or 12th grade students with forensics competition experience. All judges must have a linked Tabroom account that  includes their phone number.

    JUDGE TRAINING

Please follow this link to complete the NSDA judge training modules. They take some time, but will help you a lot!

    CONGRESS LEGISLATION 2021
    WolfCub Congress Legislation

    SPECIFIC EVENT RULES

    DEBATE GUIDE
-Computers and printed evidence/materials can be used in round.
-The first speech on each side is a constructive and should be used to present the case for/against the resolution. The Neg should also use its constructive to respond to the Aff case.
-The last two speeches should not contain any new arguments but instead should be used to make refutations and summarize the round. The very last Aff speech is not allowed any NEW refutations or arguments unless addressing a new response made by the Neg in their last speech.

    DRAMATIC/HUMOROUS INTERPRETATION
Using a play, short story, or other published work, students perform a selection of one or more portions of a piece up to ten minutes in length. With a spotlight on character development and depth, Dramatic Interpretation focuses on a student’s ability to convey emotion through the use of a dramatic text. Competitors may portray one or multiple characters. No props or costumes may be used. Performances may also include an introduction written by the student to contextualize the performance and state the title and author.
    Please time all speeches.

    EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING
In Extemporaneous Speaking, students are presented with a choice of three questions related to current events and, in 30 minutes, prepare a seven-minute speech answering the selected question. Students may consult articles and evidence they gather prior to the contest, but may not use the Internet during preparation. Topics range from political matters to economic concerns to foreign policy to international crisis. Students are given questions that range from domestic issues within the United States to international issues. The speech is delivered from memory.
Students will come to the room one at a time, as their prep time finishes. Please start the round as soon as the first student arrives. Because these speeches are spontaneous, time signals MUST be given. Non-verbal time signals should begin with 5 minutes remaining (open hand palm towards speaker), 4 minutes remaining (4 fingers up), 3, 2, 1, 30 seconds (hand in the shape of a "C"), and count down the last 10 seconds. Don't worry if you miss one; just get most.

    ORIGINAL ORATORY
    1. Contest: This contest comprises only memorized orations actually composed by the contestants and not used by them during a previous contest season. No visual aids are permitted.
    2. Subject: Any appropriate subject may be used, but the orator must be truthful. Any non-factual reference, especially a personal one, must be so identified.
    3. Length: The time limit in Original Oratory is ten minutes with a 30-second “grace period.” If there are multiple judges in the round, all must agree that the student has gone beyond the grace period. Should a student go beyond the grace period, the student may not be ranked 1st. There is no other prescribed penalty for going over the grace period. The ranking is up to each individual judge’s discretion. Judges who choose to time are to use accurate (stopwatch function) timing devices. No minimum time is mandated.
    4. Quotation: Not more than 150 words of the oration may be direct quotation from any other speech or writing and such quotations must be identified in a printed copy of the oration supplied prior to registration. Extensive paraphrasing from other sources is prohibited.

    JUDGE PROVISION
Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee. You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It takes two minutes.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments recommend judges to have a judge philosophy on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example (it doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up).
