Employment Opportunities

Speech and/or  Debate Coach for Summer and Academic School Year

The Golden State Academy is a nationally acclaimed speech and debate organization that seeks to provide award winning coaching to middle school and high school students. We are currently looking for talented individuals with a passion for teaching to fulfill one of the following roles below. We are looking for in person instructors currently for the Summer 2022 for our Fremont, Cupertino (Polygon Academy) and East San Jose (Aborn Institute) locations.  Coaches seeking to coach online are welcomed to apply but our priority at the moment is staffing our in person programs.

 1. Debate Coach
Debate coaches will be responsible for lecturing on 1 of the 2 debate formats that we offer throughout the year. Classes will have a heavy emphasis on developing complex arguments to answer debate topics on a monthly basis. Qualified applicants should have a proficiency for online research, argumentation and public speaking. Having prior knowledge on high school debate would also be appreciated.

Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Reviewing our curriculum and instructing on debate topics, arguments and current events
  • Ability to control a classroom setting and work with 6th - 12th grade students
  • Proficiency in communication and public speaking
  • Ability to learn new material and review said information on a regular basis
  • Committed to instructing 2 hour classes at least 2 times a week
  • Ability to write and communicate positive criticism
  • Ability to learn and instruct lectures on debate theory
  • Ability to deliver lectures in an enthusiastic, age appropriate and engaging manner
  • Previous competitive experience in debate or speech is appreciated but not necessary
  • Previous teaching/coaching experience is appreciated but not necessary
  • Be an excellent instructor who is passionate about education and working with students.

​Compensation: Competitive, part-time hourly pay based on experience
2. Speech Coach (Interpretation Events)
Interpretation events focus on the student's ability to take literature, condense it down to 10 minutes and perform the material in front of an audience. Very similar to theatre, interpretation will focus on acting, communication and conveying a message to their audience. Qualified applicants should have a proficiency for theatre, English and public speaking. Having prior knowledge on high school speech would also be appreciated.

Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Reviewing our curriculum and coaching students on acting/interpreting literature
  • A proficiency in theatre or acting
  • Ability to deliver lectures in an enthusiastic, age appropriate and engaging manner
  • Ability to control a classroom setting and work with 6th - 9th grade students
  • Proficiency in communication and public speaking
  • Committed to instructing 2 hour classes at least 2 times a week
  • Ability to write and communicate positive criticism
  • Being comfortable with speech exercises
  • Previous competitive experience in debate or speech is appreciated but not necessary
  • Previous teaching/coaching experience is appreciated but not necessary
  • Be an excellent instructor who is passionate about education and working with students.

    3. Speech Coach (Platform Events)
Platform speech events focus on the student's ability to write their own speeches to address issues that they see in society. They will then provide a solution to the problem that they present. Qualified applicants will need a proficiency in speech or creative writing, public speaking and English.

Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Reviewing our curriculum and helping students construct speeches.
  • A proficiency in creative writing or speech writing
  • Proficiency in communication and public speaking
  • Committed to instructing 2 hour classes at least 2 times a week
  • Ability to deliver lectures in an enthusiastic, age appropriate, and engaging manner
  • Being comfortable with speech exercises
  • Previous competitive experience in debate or speech is appreciated but not necessary
  • Previous teaching/coaching experience is appreciated but not necessary
  • Be an excellent instructor who is passionate about education and working with students.

The Golden State Academy is run by some of the most talented and recognized coaches across the nation in speech and debate. Accolades range from national finalists to multiple state champions in both middle and high school competitions.
