    Information

Wilcox Speech & Debate is pleased to host the Bay Area JV Novice Invitational Tournament this year -- we look forward to hosting you (virtually) this spring!

    Competition Events
The tournament will consist of competition in both debate and speech events. Debate competition will include Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas. We will use the March topics for both LD and PF. We will offer five preliminary debate rounds; all debate events will tentatively break to octofinals.
Speech will include Interpretation, Oratory, Extemporaneous, and Impromptu. We will offer three preliminary speech rounds. All speech rounds will be synchronous. Double entry in speech events will be allowed (at your own risk)!
We will host mandatory online check in for all students, judges, and schools on Friday evening. Preliminary rounds will be held on Saturday, and elimination rounds on Sunday.

    Competition Pools
This tournament is intended to be a JV/Novice competition. Students that are eligible include middle school students, first year debaters, and freshmen/sophomore students in high school. Depending on tournament registration, we reserve the right to collapse (or split) divisions to maintain the integrity of competition. If we have enough entries, we will split separate events into two divisions: Novice and JV.

    Tournament Perks
We will provide free tournament swag (including t-shirts) to all competitors. We will provide awards for all winners post-tournament.
We are also working on an exciting workshop and a keynote program to host at the tournament, centered around debate and public service. We believe that the skills that we learn from debate are not restricted to the competitive space, but rather intended to equip young leaders with the tools they need to strike positive change in our society. Stay tuned for more information!

    Giving Back Through Service
Service is prided in the debate community -- this invitational tournament will be an excellent beacon for that. This tournament will be 100% run by experienced, award-winning, current varsity debaters with years of experience. Bringing together experienced high school debaters from the Bay Area, we seek to share our knowledge and experience with younger, growing debaters and speakers.

    Judging Info
Varsity debaters will also be eligible to judge at this tournament.
Tournament fines will be $50/round for missing judges.

We will follow NSDA rules with 4 minutes of prep time.

    Interpretation
We will host a combined Interpretation event for all NSDA solo interpretative speech events -- including humorous, dramatic, and program interp. Competitors will be evaluated based on audience appeal, and ranked as such by judges.
We will follow NSDA rules for Interpretation events, with 10 minute speeches.

Your email address will be the one included when we send the logistics email.

    EVENT SELECTION
Make sure you have checked the double-entry policies if there are any. We are not responsible for schedule conflicts.
Please inform students who are double entered to notify their later event in the competition room chat that they are double entered and will be back, THEN go to their earlier event and ask to speak first.
BOTH partners must fill out form and pay in order to be registered!

    JUDGE PROVISION
Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee. You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments recommend judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example:
"I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
