    WEST COAST INVITATIONAL

    9-11 December 2022

    DEADLINE
    6 December 2022
NO REFUNDS AFTER 5 DEC 2022
    ELIGIBILITY
    Open to 5th - 12th graders
    PLATFORM
    Online through NSDA Campus

    Information

West Coast Debate is pleased to host the West Coast Debate Invitational this winter!

    Competition Events
The tournament will consist of competition in Public Forum on the NSDA Nov/Dec topic. We will also provide competition in Lincoln Douglas on both the Sept/Oct and Nov/Dec topics. We will offer five preliminary debate rounds; all debate events will tentatively break to octofinals.
We will host mandatory online check in for all students, judges, and schools on Friday evening. Preliminary rounds will be held on Saturday, and elimination rounds on Sunday.

    Competition Pools
This tournament will have a single division for all events.
Additionally, while this tournament is labelled "West Coast", students regardless of location are welcome to register!

    Tournament Rules

    Tech Time:
All students will be given 10 minutes of tech time if they are experiencing difficulties. After 10 minutes has elapsed, the judge must report to the Judges Lounge -- tournament staff will determine the forfeit. If competitors do not show up by the Tech Time, they will forfeit the round, and the present entry will get a bye. Only tournament staff should enter forfeits.

    Judging Obligations:
All judges will be obligated for both days. For Saturday, the obligation is all rounds. For Sunday, all judges will be obligated for the first two elimination rounds, or one round after GSA's last student is eliminated, whichever comes later.
There is no way we will be able to run the competition on Sunday if judges do not show up! If a school has students in elimination rounds, but missing judges on Sunday, we will have to drop those entries in eliminations -- please do not make us do this!

    Missing Judges:
If judges do not report to their assigned rounds by the tech check time, we will fine and replace the judge. We cannot run on time if judges do not show up on time. If your room is missing a judge, please send a representative to the “Help Desk” and type your room number into the “#missing-judges” channel.

    Judging Guide: tinyurl.com/wilcoxjudging
This Judging Guide includes a comprehensive list of steps on how judging will work, how to use tabroom/enter ballots, and judging protocols. If you follow the instructions on this document by the letter, you will not run into any issues!

    Past Judge Orientation Slides: https://tinyurl.com/judgeorientationslides
These slides provide a comprehensive guide on all tournament events and judging recommendations. It also includes the timings for each format listed on the individual event slides.

    Rule Violations:
Rule violations or alleged violations must be promptly reported to tournament staff. Tournament staff will make the final decision. Judges are not allowed to make decisions on rule violations.

    Camera Policy:
All competitors and judges in the round are asked to keep on their cameras at all times. If keeping cameras on may be an issue for your team in terms of bandwidth, please email us.

    Speech Events Rules:
    • Impromptu: CHSSA rules -- with 5 minute speeches and 2 minutes preparation
    • Interpretation: NSDA rules -- with 10 minute speeches
    • Oratory: NSDA rules -- with 10 minute speeches
    • Spontaneous Argumentation: Stanford Debate rules
      • Prep - 3, Aff - 2, Neg - 2, CX - 5, Aff - 2, Neg - 2

    Debate Events Rules:
    • Lincoln Douglas: NSDA rules  (4 mins prep, counterplans allowed)
    • Public Forum: NSDA rules  (3 mins prep, no counterplans allowed)

    Debate Topics:
    • Lincoln Douglas: Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec
    • Public Forum: Nov/Dec

    Entry Price

One debate event and parent is judging $100
One debate event and parent is OPTING OUT OF judging $200
Tournament fines will be $50 for virtually all cases -- including missing judges, missed rounds, etc.

Each person in a PF team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.
Registration will not be complete until payment is received.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".

More tournament resources can be found here.
