    2023 SUNVITE

    6-8 January 2023

    DEADLINE
    22 Dec 2022
    ELIGIBILITY
Open to middle and high school students
    LOCATION
    Hybrid:
    Online or Nova Southeastern University

    Information

Reminder, all events will be IN PERSON except Varsity Public Forum which will be HYBRID.

    Dear Friends,
On behalf of the NSU University School, we cordially invite you to attend the Sunvite Tournament to be IN PERSON on January 6-8. We promise to continue our tradition of top-notch competition, exceptional judging, and amazing trophies!

LD/PF/Policy judges will be required to have paradigms published online. Those paradigms will be audited prior to registration, and if blank or deemed inappropriate the school will be charged an uncovered judge fee. For every uncovered judge you will be charged $60/round in debate or $150/day for Speech. Any rounds missed by judges from your school, will result in an additional $50 fee per round in prelims and $100 per round in elimination rounds. It is not our goal to make a profit off of missed rounds; however, having present/competent judges is vital to running a successful tournament. We will be using online ballots for all events.

Prefs/Strikes: Prefs will be available in LD. Strikes will be available for Public Forum. We will make every effort to strike AT LEAST 12% of the PF pool, and ordinal prefs in LD.

Entourage Rule: All coaches watching rounds, communicating with the tournament, coaching or in any way actively contributing to the competitive success of their team must be in for at least 3 rounds of debate or 1 day of speech. The determination of eligible/qualified is left up to the tournament staff. The penalty for violations of this rule may range from loss of MPJ/Strikes, forfeiture of your entries, or additional fines.

Resolutions/Topic Areas: We will be using the January topic in PF and LD. Congress legislation, Impromptu, and Extemp topic areas will be posted no later than December 15th. If you’d like to submit

Debate: We will run SIX rounds in PF/LD/Policy. The first two rounds will be pre-set randomly and will take place Friday afternoon. Rounds three through six will be power matched (high-low within brackets). Both LD and PF will break to partial or full Triple-Octafinals, depending on the number of entries. The order of tie-breakers is 1) wins, 2)opposition wins, 3) drop high-low speaker points, 4) ZScore 5) total speaker points. Public Forum will use the tabroom coinflip to flip before rounds. PF will not be side locked in elimination rounds if they previously hit.

Speech: Wearedropping the lowest prelim rank and we will use clean breaks--not cumulative ranks--in each elimination round. We will break to quarterfinals in any speech event with more than 70 entries, if there are more than 100 we will have a octofinals round. There will be NO section with more than 6 speakers. Speech competitors can double-enter within each pattern, so an ambitious competitor can compete in four different speech events. Breaks will be determined by total ranks in prelims, followed by recips. Whenever possible we will break the number of competitors on total ranks, using recips only when absolutely necessary.

    Speech Patterns
A: DI, DUO, OO, MX, ADS
    B: HI. POI, IMP, INFO

    VPF HYBRID MODEL
For VPF what this looks like is if EITHER team is virtual then the entire round will be virtual. If a team is on campus they’ll be assigned a classroom w/ a room monitor to do the round. If both teams are in-person we will prioritize an in-person judge for that room. Judges judging virtual debates will have the Media Center, and theatre to judge from. I will have NSDA Campus w/ Observers so coaches can watch rounds if they choose.

    Entry Price

Online PF and parent is judging $100
Online PF and parent is OPTING OUT OF JUDGING $280
If you choose to travel to the tournament in-person with the GSA team, we will be collecting a $400 deposit. Please keep in mind that the final travel cost may be higher.

Each person in a PF/Policy/Duo team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF/Policy/Duo team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

Registration will not be complete until payment is received.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

This tournament requires judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
