    ELIGIBILITY
Open to middle and high school students
    PLATFORM

    Information

The La Reina Speech and Debate team invite you and your squad to participate in our Annual Invitational Spring Fling Speech and Debate Tournament to be held on Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2. At most, students can enter in one debate event and two speech events.

We will have Open and Novice divisions in High School and Middle School categories. The March/April NSDA LD topic and the April NSDA topic for Public Forum.

All Individual Events (speech) will be combined into one pattern to make the schedule more efficient and will be synchronous online. Double entries in Speech Events are allowed. Middle School students are welcome to compete in the high school divisions if they choose to.

Changes or drops after 25 April 2021 will be charged a $10 nuisance fee on top of the entry fee. All space in debate and speech events will be allocated on a first come, first served basis; register early.

    Judges
Varsity debaters in their senior year are allowed to judge Novice division students. Varsity high school debaters may judge novice rounds. Parent judges welcome.

    Debate Topics:
    L/D Debate Topic: March/April Topic
    Public Forum Topic: April Topic

    Divisions:
Novice and Open Division in Debate and Speech Events in High School and Middle School categories. Novice is normally defined as the first year of competition.

Debate Pattern: Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas Debate are in one pattern.
    Speech Events Pattern: Extemporaneous/Dramatic Interpretation /Expository/ Oratorical Interpretation/ Impromptu /Persuasive /Humorous Interpretation.

    General Rules:
School registration in part or whole may be rejected due to space considerations - please register early! All divisions will receive medals. We reserve the right to combine divisions if the entry warrants.

    Speech Events Rules:
Generally we use CHSSA rules but not in all cases. Exceptions include: Persuasive will include both advocacy and other "persuasive" speeches. Extemp is combined national and international. OO, Persuasive and OA are combined as "Oratory". Semifinals will be held in individual speech events with 50 or more entries or the discretion of the tournament director. Under subscribed speech events may waive finals.

    Debate Rules:
PF debate team must be two person. Brackets will be broken to avoid teams from the same school hitting each other. Debate will advance to octofinals if entry warrants. Check the schedule below to determine divisions going to octofinals.

    Entry Price

One speech and parent is judging $60
Two speech and parent is judging $70

LD and parent is judging $90
LD & 1 speech event and parent is judging $100

PF & 2 speech events and parent is judging $90

If you are opting out of judging, you will pay an additional $110.

Each person in a PF/Policy/Duo team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF/Policy/Duo team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

Registration will not be complete until payment is received.
NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    JUDGE PROVISION
Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee. You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example:
"I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
