    Information

SCJFL is proud to announce The 2022 SCJFL Middle School Southern California Championship Tournament.  This tournament is meant to encourage a healthy competition and provide an opportunity to sharpen competitive speeches before the national tournament.
The tournament will be held on Saturday, May 7th - Sunday, May 8th, 2022.
The tournament will be held entirely online.

    ELIGIBILITY
    • All competitors who advanced into an open division final round or received a placement award (speaker awards for debate are not eligible) at an SCJFL middle school tournament are eligible.
    • Each event will have a specific number of slots offered for the tournament.  If a competitor has qualified (received an award by either advancing to an elimination round or by placing in the top half of an event that did not have a final round), then the competitor is guaranteed a slot, even if the offered amount of slots has been met.
    • For example, if a student received a 5th place trophy in Poetry at the Q3 speech tournament, then he qualifies to compete in SoCal Champs, regardless of how many other people would like to attend.  The tournament will offer six slots for Poetry (see below).  So, the student would be allowed to compete in Poetry, even if more than six other qualified students also signed up.  The tournament will admit all competitors who qualify.
    • However, since Champs only offers six slots, if only four qualified students sign up for the event, then the tournament would accept two more students who are non-qualified.  These students would need to sign up on a ‘wishlist.’  The tournament staff will select wishlist students based on how well they placed in the event at a previous tournament.
    • For those who don't qualify, the tournament will accept as many wishlist requests until the slots for an event are full.
    • When signing up a student on the wishlist, it is important to note which tournament the student score best.  Only one tournament will be considered per wishlist event, so please double-check to ensure that you are selecting the best tournament that the student has done (so if a student placed 11th at SCJFL 3 and 10th at SCJFL 2, please make sure to list SCJFL 2.
    • If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to email Nadia and Victor.

    SLOTS OFFERED PER EVENT
Impromptu, SPAR, Storytelling, Informative, Duo, Public Forum, LD, Policy, Big Questions = 12 slots offered for each event.
Declamation, Extemp, Prose, Poetry, OO/Persuasive, Speech to Entertain, Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp = 6 slots offered for each event.
    Congress = 15 slots offered.

    AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION
Upon registration, you should indicate which tournament qualified the competitor. Please make sure to write the event(s) and the respective qualifying tournament in the space next to the student’s name (e.g. Michelle Smith - Extemp - SCJFL Speech 4; HI - SCJFL Speeech 2).

NOTE: Students who are entered as qualified students but have not qualified will be dropped from the tournament and not considered on the wishlist. Please double-check the results of previous tournaments to ensure that your students are entered correctly.

    WISHLIST
Students who did not qualify, but who wish to be waitlisted for an event can sign up by listing the following information. The tournament staff will admit the highest ranked waitlisted students until all of the slots are filled for that event.

    JUDGES
Ballots will be issued to judges a few minutes before the start time of the round.  The exact release time of the ballots can be viewed on the STATUS tab of the tournament registration page.
Judges who are scheduled for the round, but do not receive ballots should go to the judge standby room: 8x8.vc/SCJFLstandby
Teams whose judges who do not accept their ballots will be charged a no-show fee.  The fees will incrementally increase throughout the tournament:
    • 1st missed ballot - $20
    • 2nd missed ballot - $40
    • Each subsequently missed ballot - $50
Judges whose names are called in the standby room but who do not respond will be considered a no-show.

When judges receive a ballot, we ask that they please stay in the competition room to finish filling out the ballot.  That way, if the tournament staff need to contact the judge, they can easily go into the competition room to discuss any potential problems.
Judges are encouraged to submit the decisions (ranks) of the round and then add any additional feedback for the students after the decision has been recorded. This helps the tournament stay on time; we frequently are waiting on one single ballot before we can calculate the next round, so submitting a decision quickly moves the tournament along.

    WISHLIST DECISION
After 2 May 2022, the tournament staff will assess the number of qualified entries and determine the number of additional wishlist requests that can be accepted.
The tournament staff will add wishlist students to the tournament and then notify the coaches to check the updated registration summary to verify that the entries look correct.

    Registration Form

There are two ways you can compete at this tournament. Please specify which one you are:
    1. AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION
~ All competitors who advanced into an open division final round or received a placement award at an SCJFL middle school tournament are eligible. In other words, if a competitor has qualified (received an award by either advancing to an elimination round or by placing in the top half of an event that did not have a final round), then the competitor is guaranteed a slot.
~ Speaker awards for debate do not count.

~ You will be asked to state which past tournament you qualified through.
    2. WISHLIST REQUEST
For those who don't qualify, the tournament staff will select wishlist students based on how well they placed in the event at a previous tournament.
When signing up a student on the wishlist, it is important to note which tournament the student score best.  Only one tournament will be considered per wishlist event, so please double-check to ensure that you are selecting the best tournament that the student has done (so if a student placed 11th at SCJFL 3 and 10th at SCJFL 2, please make sure to list SCJFL 2.

    STUDENT INFORMATION
Only SCJFL tournaments count for this qualification. Please do not list qualifications/elimination achievements from other tournaments as they will not count. Please sign up for the wishlist instead.

    PARENT CONTACT INFORMATION
Your email address will be the one included when we send the logistics email.

    EVENT SELECTION
Make sure you have checked the scheduling overlaps. You are responsible for your own events and we are not responsible for schedule conflicts.
*Some elimination rounds happen at the same time even if the preliminary rounds do not. So if you make it to both, you'll need to choose one to forfeit.

Pattern A is PF and LD debate -> may not double-enter in Pattern D
Pattern B is Prose/HI/Persuasive/DUO/SPAR/IMP -> may not enter more than two of these
Pattern C is DI/OI/DEC/Poetry/Storytelling/Informative/Extemp -> may not enter more than two of these or one if extemp
Pattern D is Congressional debate -> may not double-enter in Pattern A

Pattern F is Elementary Congress and SPAR -> may only choose one of these
Pattern G is Elementary OO/Persuasive, DUO, OI/DEC, Poetry/Storytelling/Informative/IMP -> may not enter more than two of these

    JUDGE PROVISION
    • If you are signing up to judge, you must be available for the entire tournament schedule of your child's division (eg. if your child is competing in middle school, you need to be present for the whole middle school tournament.
    • Judges are obligated to be on standby for each round. If you do not get a ballot, please go to the help room and wait there in case you get called to cover for a no-show judge. This tournament is very strict in using fines for enforcing punctuality and judge presence, so make sure to follow all their rules to avoid getting charged.
    • Judges who do not accept their assigned ballot will be charged a $20 no-show fee for the first offense. Each subsequent no-show from the judge will warrant a $50 charge. Judges can avoid this fee by coming to the judge standby room for their ballot assignment; sometimes e-mails delay delivery for any number of reasons that are outside the control of the tournament staff.  By coming to the standby room, judges can be messaged their ballot directly so that they aren’t marked as having missed the round.
    • Judges who do not write sufficient feedback to the competitors will be fined $20 per round.  Unsatisfactory ballots will be determined by the tabulation staff.
    TOURNAMENT UPDATE REGARDING JUDGE BALLOTS:
    1. We will need to begin implementing a fine for blank/nearly blank ballots.
    2. Oral Critiques: No ballot may be returned without a written reason for decision. Oral commentary is not considered a substitute for the written ballot.
    3. Judges who are unfamiliar with events may be removed from the tournament at the discretion of the tournament staff, and fines may be applied.
    4. A good concept in writing a ballot is the compliment sandwich (write a compliment, add some constructive feedback, and end with another compliment).  It is frustrating for students to receive a speech ballot that says, “Great job!” with a 5th place ranking and with no actual useful feedback.
