    Information

Welcome to the NSDA San Francisco Bay District Qualifier Tournaments!
Debate Tournament -- Friday, March 15 (online) and Saturday, March 16 (in person) at College Prep School, Oakland

    AUDIT PROCEDURES
As required by the NSDA, we will follow strict audit procedures to minimize the chances of any tabulation errors. It is critical that all coaches pay close attention to these matters.
After each debate round, we will make ballots and results available to all coaches for review. It is the responsibility of every coach to carefully review results for his/her students and raise any questions or concerns with the tab staff promptly.
Rounds 1 and 2 are pre-set, but beginning with round 2 we will allow a 15-minute period after publishing round results to coaches for any protests before proceeding with pairing the subsequent round.
And it will be particularly important for coaches to review results after round 4 because those results will determine which debaters advance to elimination rounds.
Thanks for your help ensuring that we have the best possible national qualifying tournament!

    DEBATE TOURNAMENT PROCEDURES
For our 2024 qualifier, we will be employing the NSDA's option for a single-elimination bracketed tournament with four preliminary rounds.
All debaters will compete in four preliminary rounds, after which all debaters/teams with prelim records of 4-0 or 3-1 will advance to a single-elimination bracket.
We will use three-judge panels in all rounds of all debate events.

    BELONGING & INCLUSION STATION
The Belonging and Inclusion Station (BIS)--formerly Equity Office--exists to address violations of harassment and discrimination policies and provide a safe space for individuals who report harassment and discrimination incidents at NSDA district and national tournaments.
The BIS may serve as a resource for any student, coach, judge, or official participating at an NSDA-sponsored tournament. Complaints may be filed if an individual feels as if an instance of harassment and/or discrimination has occurred. Examples include:
    • Perceived discriminatory practice on the basis of (but not limited to) race/color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity/expression, age, disability, sexual orientation, and/or veteran or military status.
    • Perceived retaliation, harassment, or intimidation due to an individual’s filing of a complaint or participating in an intake regarding a violation of the NSDA’s harassment and discrimination policies.
There will be a Belonging & Inclusion Advocate onsite at the following locations:
Saturday, March 16 -- College Prep School (location TBA)

Belonging & Inclusion Advocate: Justin Kurup ([email protected])
Other BIA include Dr. Tommie Lindsey, Jr. & Kimberly Fradelis

National Speech & Debate Association Harassment and Discrimination Policy
The National Speech& Debate Association is committed to providing its participants, judges, coaches, and staff the opportunity to pursue excellencein their endeavors. This opportunity can exist only when each member of our community is assured an atmosphere of mutual respect. The NSDA prohibits all forms of harassment and discrimination. Accordingly, all forms of harassment and discrimination, whether written or oral, based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, citizenship, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by any applicable federal, state, or local law are prohibited, whether committed by participants, judges, coaches, or observers. Individuals who are found to have violated this policy will be subject to the full range of sanctions, up to and including removal from the tournament premises.
Disclaimer: Individual school district policies may vary. This policy is not intended to replace established school district procedures. If you adopt this policy, please replace our name with your tournament or school name.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

    First time judging?
This is a great collection of short videos that one of the leagues have put together to learn each event: click here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.
Click here to find other training and official certification resources. Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
