    19-20 March 2022 for Debate

    DEADLINE
    9 Mar 2022
    ELIGIBILITY
    -
    PLATFORM
    Online through NSDA Campus

    Information

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN PERSON
Please be advised that the NSDA expects to hold the 2022 championships in person – Louisvile, Kentucky – June 12 to 17.
Only those students who intend to compete in Louisville should be entered in our district qualifiers.

DISTRICT TOURNAMENT DATES – ALL ONLINE
    • Student Congress: Saturday, March 19
    • Debate: Saturday & Sunday, March 19-20
(Prelims on Saturday; Elims on Sunday)
    • Speech: Saturday, March 26

    DEBATE FORMAT
We have decided to run four prelim rounds in all debate events, to be followed by elimination rounds. Only debaters/teams with prelim records of 3-1 or better will advance to the Sunday elimination rounds.

    JUDGES FOR DEBATE EVENTS
Based on the results of our district survey, we will be using three-judge panels in ALL debate events (Policy, LD, Public Forum) in prelims and elims.

    DEBATE ELIMINATION ROUNDS
Although about half of our survey respondents expressed a preference for a double elimination bracket, that would require as many as five elimination rounds, which would push our debate tournament to a third day. Therefore, we will be using a single elimination format in elimination rounds, similar to our traditional two-down system whereby teams with two losses are dropped from the tournament up until a certain point where the tournament transitioned to a single elimination bracket.
Under the single elimination bracket approach, we expect to complete the tournament with a maximum of three elimination rounds on Sunday.

    STUDENT CONGRESS – LEGISLATION
With apologies for announcing the legislative docket so late, but with tremendous appreciate to Quest Sandel for jumping in on short notice to author this year’s legislation, you can find the full set of legislation here.

    STUDENT CONGRESS
Our Student Congress tournament will begin and end on Saturday, March 19.
In order to qualify for the maximum number of slots to the national tournament, we need to have 8 schools represented in Senate and at least 59 competitors in House, so please consider entering students in Student Congress to participate in the Saturday morning session and give one speech in order for us to reach those entry goals.

SPEECH FORMAT – SATURDAY, MARCH 26
We will hold three prelim rounds in all speech events and then break the top half of the field to elim rounds. In some events, that will mean breaking directly to finals while in other events we will break to semis, depending upon the total number of entries.
ALL SPEECH EVENTS will be conducted synchronously, including Duo Interp.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
