    Information

    Dear Coaches:

You are cordially invited to the Larry A. Ryle High School VIRTUALLY Haunted Invitational - a NIETOC qualifier! We are delighted to host one of the first tournaments of the season, and hope that you will come out to join us for a spooky good time from the safety of your locations on Saturday, October 31st (with some asynchronous judging a few days before).

This will be a NSDA Campus tournament --ALL participants (students, judges, etc) must have an account on Tabroom.com.

    CATEGORIES
We will be offering all KHSSL speech and debate events. Please visit the KHSSL handbook for rules.
Prepared events will run asynchronously (recorded videos) and limited prep/debate will run synchronously (live):

    ASYNCHRONOUS
    Declamation
    DI
    Duo Interp
    HI
    Informative
    Oratory
    Poetry
    POI
    Prose
    Storytelling

    SYNCHRONOUS
    Extemp
    Impromptu
    Improvisational Duo
    Congress
    Varsity LD
    Novice LD
    Public Forum
    Policy

    DOUBLE ENTRY POLICY
We will be offering unlimited entries; however, only the top three scores in each event will count toward sweepstakes. Students may triple in asynchronous events AND single in synchronous events. Thus, you could have a student quad entry (ie. prose/declamation/DI/broadcasting or OO/informative/storytelling/LD).

    JUDGES
Any judging drops will be charged $50 each. With the exception of debate, all judges must be available for both asynchronous and synchronous judging. Any requests for exemptions to this rule must be cleared with me in advance. Your judges should be familiar with the KHSSL rules and ballots, and are expected to be in the judge pool during rounds where they are not explicitly scheduled. Please note that there will be two judge pools -- one for debate and one for IE/congress -- and your judges should be ready to judge any event in that judge pool.

    AWARDS
We will be presenting full color certificates for the top 6 performers in each speech event. Debate certificates (speaker and placings) will be given based on number of entries. We will be offering separate debate (LD/PF/Congress/CX) and speech (IE) sweepstakes awards. We will award plaques to the top 3 schools in each. Awards will be mailed to schools upon completion of the tournament.

    PLATFORM
We will be using NSDA Campus for synchronous competition, which is integrated with Tabroom.com. Asynchronous competition will be judged via Tabroom.com. You can refer to the KHSSL virtual best practices guide or the NSDA website to familiarize yourself with this platform.

    ASYNCHRONOUS PREPARED EVENTS
Teams will submit one video link per entry that will be used for the entire tournament. Please ensure that YouTube links are marked unlisted, and if using Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. permissions are set so that anyone with the link can view. Duo Interpretation videos must be split-screen. Refer to the KHSSL virtual best practices guide for tips on recording and submitting videos.

    SYNCHRONOUS LIMITED PREP EVENTS
All events will have prep/holding rooms. Students will go to their prep/holding room and will be released to their competition room by the monitor. Improv duo students must be in separate rooms.

    SYNCHRONOUS DEBATE EVENTS
Ryle students will be entered in novice LD and only be entered in varsity/open debate contests if entries are needed to create suitable competition for everyone involved. Congress will be held if there is a minimum of 8 non-Ryle students. We will host policy debate if there are at least 2 entries. Ryle students who are entered will be eligible for individual awards but not for sweepstakes. We will be using current topics; novice LD will be using the modest novice topic. We will be using the Oct/Nov KHSSL congress legislation (to be published). Due to the one-day nature of the tournament, expect all preliminary rounds for debate to be pre-set. Partners must be in separate rooms.

    COSTUME CONTEST
We will still hold our annual costume contest before awards to celebrate Halloween! Please encourage your students to dress up and submit their photos (we’ll post a google form) by Thursday, October 29th at 7pm EST. A voting link will be sent to all the day of the tournament.

    Sincerely,
Rachel Page, head coach RHS Speech/Debate
