    Information

    Colleagues and friends:
We’re happy to invite you to the fifth annual Peninsula Invitational, hosted by Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rolling Hills Estates, California. Debate events will begin on Saturday, January, 22, 2022 and end on Monday, January 24, 2022. Speech and Congress will take place on our campus in person on Sunday, January 23, 2022. This year we will be hosting Saturday and Sunday debate events (other than Congress) online using NSDA Campus. Monday elimination rounds will be held via Zoom.

We will offer novice and varsity divisions of Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum debate, plus Parliamentary and Congressional Debate as well as all CHSSA and NIETOC speech events. We are a TOC quarterfinals bid tournament in the varsity Lincoln- Douglas division, a semifinals bid in the varsity Policy division, a finals bid in the Public Forum division, and a top six bid in Congressional debate. We are also a bid tournament in speech for both NIETOC and the TOC hosted by The University of Kentucky (UK).

Varsity Policy debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Public Forum debate will begin on Saturday, January 22 and conclude on Monday, January 24. Parliamentary and novice debate divisions will begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday. Congress and speech events will take place on Sunday only.

We look forward to the challenge this year presents and hope you are able to join us.

    TOURNAMENT RULES AND ENTRY GUIDELINES

    Double Entry Limitations:
Students may only compete in one debate event. Students may not enter more than two speech events per pattern. Students who double-enter are expected to get to their rounds on time.

    Patterns:
Speech Pattern A: Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Thematic Interpretation/Program Oral Interpretation, Original Prose/Poetry
Speech Pattern B: Extemp, Impromptu, Original Oratory/Advocacy/Persuasive, Informative/Expository, Oratorical Interpretation/Declamation

    Debate Topics:
The LD topic is “Resolved: The appropriation of outer space by private entities is unjust.”
The Public Forum topic is “Resolved: The United States federal government should legalize all illicit drugs.”

    Judging:
In order to save us 15-20 minutes between rounds, while eliminating any possibility of tab entry error, all balloting will be done electronically. All judges need to be linked to a Tabroom account to be registered. Seasoned competitors in their third or fourth year of competition are permitted to judge the novice division of their event.

All judges are required to have judge philosophies on Tabroom.  Failure to do so will result in losing preferences/strikes and/or not having the judge count towards your reduced fee.

Any limitations on availability need to be communicated to Nadia ahead of time. Any surprises during the tournament will be treated as “no shows” (e.g. a judge paired for round three who isn’t on campus means he/she has not fulfilled her judging requirement, even if he's/she’s only unavailable for round three and was on campus for the other five rounds.

    Judging obligations:
Judges are committed to judge the first full elim or one round beyond when the last student from GSA is eliminated from competition. Missed round fees will be assessed by the tournament organizers if judges leave before your commitment is filled.

    Event Rules and Guidelines:
NIETOC rules will be followed for Oratory, DI, HI, POI, Informative, and Duo Interpretation. http://nietoc.com/full-details/
CHSSA rules will be followed for Extemp, Oratorical Interpretation, and Impromptu.
    http://www.chssa.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/CHSSA.RandR_.2018-19.pdf
The TOC rules and procedures document will be followed for Policy Debate, LD, PF, and Congressional Debate. https://ci.uky.edu/UKDebate/tournament-procedures

    JUDGE PROVISION
Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
