Beginner Non-Competitive Speech & Debate
☻ Ohlone College (Fremont Campus or Newark Center) ☻
Did you know that speech and debate are actually two distinct areas of study?! Well, during this summer course, The Golden State Academy will tackle both disciplines. Our goal is that by the end of the class, students will be able to find themselves surrounded by people they call family. Students will have the opportunity to work with both state and nationally renowned coaches. Our goal is to ensure that students break out of their shell and feel confident when speaking in front of a crowd. Additionally, we teach important concepts that will increase their ability to stay engaging and professional while speaking. Students will learn researching and critical thinking skills that will prove valuable in life regardless of their future. In this class students will be introduced to prepared and unprepared speech events, and debate via spontaneous argumentation. This program is highly recommended for students with little to no experience, but students with experience are welcomed to join us as well!

In this class students will now take the structure they have learned in impromptu and spar debate and apply in a prepared format. Students will either write an informative or persuasive speech and for debate, will be introduced to congressional debate where they will research and write arguments in favor of legislation that they can understand and relate to. Students will learn researching skills including how to verify if a source is credible or valid, how to properly summarize or quote sources as well as how to give effective speeches using presentation and delivery skills required for both platform speeches and congressional debates.
