    NANO NAGLE TOURNAMENT

    12-14 October 2024

    DEADLINE
    1 Oct 2024

DROPPING AFTER THIS DATE WILL CAUSE YOU THE ENTRY FEE PLUS A FINE
    ELIGIBILITY
Open to high school students ONLY
    LOCATION
Presentation High School in San Jose, CA
(2281 Plummer Ave, San Jose, CA 95125)
    Campus Map

    Information

We invite you to the Nano Nagle Tournament. We provide competition in Varsity Lincoln Douglas debate and Varsity Public Forum debate.
The tournament will use the NSDA September/October topic for all divisions.

In the spirit of Nano Nagle, her charism and our longstanding tradition of PHS Speech & debate of support speech and debate in our community and beyond we will be making a donation from proceeds. We are proud over the last decade to have donated more than $115,000 from the Voices Invitational/renamed Nano Nagle and look forward to doing that this year.

    THE TOURNAMENT
    • The tournament will be able to accommodate approximately 55 VLD and 55 VPF entries. Once we reach the cap in an event we will start a waitlist that will prioritize new school admission and then smaller school entries. There will be an initial cap of 8 entries in LD and 8 in PF.
    • Both divisions will feature six preliminary rounds of debate and will clear all winning records to the elimination rounds up to a full double-octafinal.
    • In VLD mutual preference judging will be available to all schools whose judges have entered their paradigms on Tabroom. We will be policing this with increased vigor this year - and it's now fairly easy to turn off a given school's ability to pref, so please don't sleep on this rule. ALL of your judges must have a paradigm on Tabroom in order for you to receive prefs.

    LOCATION
    • Presentation High School is located in south San Jose near the Willow Glen neighborhood.
    • We ask that you park on campus at all times. We also ask that students and guests enter the building from the front entrance (off Plummer) when arriving to campus to ensure/comply with our security protocols.
    • We appreciate the eagerness to get to campus and check in etc. On Saturday, Sunday, Monday campus will be open at 8am and we look forward to welcoming you then :)
    • We have moved around some spaces and are excited to share the speech & debate office new location. Room 302 on the side of the Center facing the pool is where you will come to pick up meal tickets & or express tab concerns. Please check out our updated campus map and or ask one of the Pres girls if you need help finding anything!

    MEALS
    • All competitors should be prepared to cover the cost of their meals.
    • Judges and coaches will still receive free meals throughout the tournament. All meals are available for purchase for all competitors. Vegetarian options will always be available for all meals.
    • In addition to concessions of snacks, drinks and small items, the current meal options are as follows:
Saturday Lunch - Full Taco bar, sides, drinks
Saturday Dinner - Ikes sandwiches, chips, drinks
Sunday Lunch - Pizza, chips, drinks
    • We will again hand out tickets with your registration for meal purchases for competitors. Saturday lunch is the only time judges or coaches need a ticket which can be retrieved from either the library or speech & debate office (room 302).

    JUDGING
    • All schools are required to provide qualified, competent judges.
    • All judges are required to have a paradigm on tabroom.com. If you enter judges without a paradigm you are at risk of having your prefs turned off.
    • All judges must be familiar with using Tabroom.com for ballots and are required to do so. We will charge a $50 administration fee for each judge that needs to be trained or have their tabroom account fixed. In the past, this has caused significant delay to the tournament.
    • If you do not have a judge who is competent as an adjudicator *and* with using the e-balloting, do not sign them up. We'd rather solve that issue beforehand.  We will assess fines in real time.  No entry from your school will be allowed to advance to elim rounds if fees are unresolved.
    • ALL JUDGES ARE STILL OBLIGATED THROUGH THE OCTOFINALS. Judges are then obligated for one round past the exit of GSA's final entry.

    HONORING OUR FOUNDRESS NANO NAGLE
    Nano Nagle
In the 1700's, Nano Nagle risked imprisonment and disgrace by fighting the oppression of Catholic children in Ireland.
The daughter of wealthy parents, Nagle secretly rented rooms in the city of Cork to educate Catholic children, which at the time was illegal. Soon, she ran seven schools--five for girls and two for boys.
At night, she traveled the narrow streets using a lantern to light her way. As a result, she became known as the "Lady of the Lantern."
    Religious Order
In 1775, Nagle joined several other women in founding a new society, the Sisters of Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Dedicated to the service of the poor, the community was elevated to a religious order by Pope Pius VI in 1800 and renamed the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
    Bay Area Ministry
In 1854, five Sisters of the Presentation sailed into the bay of San Francisco on the aptly named steamer, Golden Gate.
That year, the sisters established a foundation in San Francisco and opened their first school on Green Street.
The sisters would go on to establish several high schools for young women in the Bay Area, including:
    • Presentation High School, San Francisco
    • Presentation High School, Berkeley
    • Presentation High School, San Jose

    Entry Price

PF and parent is judging $115
PF and parent is OPTING OUT of judging $315

LD and parent is judging $175
LD and parent is OPTING OUT of judging $400

Each person in a PF/Policy/Duo team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF/Policy/Duo team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

Registration will not be complete until payment is received.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".

More tournament resources can be found here.
