    LAKELAND WESTCHESTER CLASSIC 2023

    3-5 March 2023

    DEADLINE
    27 Feb 2023
    ELIGIBILITY
Open to middle and high school students
    PLATFORM
    Online through lakeland.classrooms.cloud

    Information

The entire 2023 tournament will run online the evening of March 3rd (Friday) and all day Saturday, March 4th. Semis and finals may be held on Sunday depending the size of the divisions.

The tournament is a finals PF bid in varsity pf.

    Divisions offered:
    • MS PF Open (Feb Topic)
    • MS PF Novice (Feb Topic)
    • Novice PF
    • JV PF
    • Varsity PF
    • Varsity LD
    • Novice LD

NOTE: Novice is for debaters in their first year of debate. This does NOT mean the first year of high school debate.
JV is for students who have no more than one previous year of debate.

All debate events are “switch side” – students will be expected to debate both sides of the resolution.

    Topics:
    LD: NSDA February Topic
PF: HS divisions will use the national topic (February)
MS: MS divisions will use the February topic

    JUDGES REQUIREMENTS
We expect that all judges will pay attention in the debates they are judging and will work to provide a fair decision based on the criteria they outline in their judge philosophies.

We also expect judges to behave in a way that is appropriate in a middle school/high school environment. Any judges that exhibit behavior inconsistent with this expectation can and will be removed from the tournament by the tournament director at his discretion. The financial costs of missed rounds will be invoiced to the judge.

Unless there is a violation of the Conduct policy by the judge or the team(s) in the debate, the tab room views the judge’s decision regarding all arguments made in the debates as final. If the tabroom determines that a judge or the team(s) violates a Conduct policy expectation, the tabroom may alter the decision in a way that it feels is fairest for the debaters involved.

    Entry Price

LD event and parent is judging $75
LD and parent is OPTING OUT OF JUDGING $200

PF and parent is judging $65
PF and parent is OPTING OUT OF JUDGING $185

Each person in a PF/Policy/Duo team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF/Policy/Duo team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

Registration will not be complete until payment is received.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended
    Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
