    Information

The administration of La Costa Canyon High School, the members of the Maverick Speech and Debate team, and I would like to invite you and your squad to attend the 52nd Annual La Costa Canyon Winter Classic Speech and Debate Tournament. We offer Policy, LD, Congress, Public Forum, Parliamentary Debate, Extemp, OPP, Impromptu, OO, OA, Info, HI, DI, POI, DUO and Declamation.

We are proud to announce that we are a TOC and NIETOC Bid Tournament!
    • TOC QUALIFICATION INFORMATION
      • Public Forum:
        •   Gold TOC qualifier at Quarterfinals!
        •  Silver TOC qualifier at Octafinals!
      •  Congress:
        • TOC qualifier for all students making the Top Six!
      • Speech

We consistently offer quality competition to over 50 schools with more than 1000 competitors from at least four states. IE's will continue to run over Saturday and Sunday and will be divided into two patterns. This will allow students to triple and quadruple enter if wanted! Judges and coaches will enjoy amazing food and respectful treatment, while competitors enjoy a friendly atmosphere and a beautiful campus.

As someone who attended La Costa Canyon and helped run the tournament for the past decade, I understand how important and impactful this tournament is to our community. We could not be more excited to invite you to continue this grand tradition of competitive excellence and camaraderie, and we hope to see you in San Diego come December.

    INFORMATION

    Events Offered:
    • Debate: Policy, Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, Congress
    • Pattern A: Impromptu, Informative, Original Prose & Poetry, Program Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Original Advocacy
    • Pattern B: Extemporaneous, Duo, Humorous Interpretation, Declamation, Original Oratory

    Double Entry Information:
Students who double enter are responsible for getting to their rounds on time. Entry limitations will be strictly enforced; violations may lead to a student being dropped from an event at the Tournament Director's discretion. Refunds will not be given for missed rounds.
    • Competitors may only enter one event in the Debate Pattern.
      • Competitors who enter Policy may not enter any other event.
    • Competitors may enter two Pattern A events and two Pattern B events.
      • Competitors who enters Extemp may not enter a second Pattern B event.
      • Competitors who enter in Extemp may enter a Debate and Pattern A event, but additional extemp prep time will not be given to students if Debate Pattern or Pattern A is running late.

    Campus & Supervision:
We are pleased to announce that all events—including Policy—will be hosted solely on the LCC campus! This should allow for simpler team supervision.
All schools must be accompanied by an adult and must remain under adult supervision throughout the tournament. No exceptions.

    Debate Topics:
    Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum:
We will be using the November/December NSDA Topic

    Judging Requirements:
All judges must be over the age of 18 and out of high school.
While we will do our best to keep pools separate, there is a chance we will need to collapse judging pools to keep the tournament running.
Judges are committed to judge one round beyond when the last student from that school is eliminated from competition.
Fines will be levied if a team’s judges repeatedly miss their call. Ensure your judges are in the judge lounge 30 minutes prior to each round. If fines are not paid, a team may be withheld from outrounds.

    Event Rules and Guidelines:
Speech & Congress: Standard CHSSA rules will be followed as closely as possible for all speech and debate events. In the Speech events we will break 14 to semi's. We also reserve the right to break more entries to semis in events with large fields. We will take seven to finals in all speech events. We will take 30 to semi's in Congress and 15 to finals. A separate P.O. contest will be held if there is enough interest to warrant.

Debate: Starting with Round 3, all prelim rounds will be power matched. Teams with a 4-2 record or better will advance to the octa-final elimination round (We may pull up if needed). Brackets will not be broken in elims. LD, PuFo, & Policy Debaters may use computers in rounds, but observers may not use computers or cell phones during rounds. Parli Debaters are not permitted to use computers during rounds, and may not have access to internet during prep.
    • The TOC and NDCA guidelines will be used for Policy, and CHSSA guidelines will be used for all other debate events.
    • The exception to this is that we will be using the new PF times that are being piloted for NSDA.

Awards: Individual awards will be presented to all debaters advancing to the octa-finals in debate events, which will be distributed in-round. The top 10 PuFo, Policy, and Parli speaker through prelims will also receive an award at the awards ceremony. All finalists in speech events and Congress will be presented awards. 1st and 2nd place Presiding Officers will also receive awards.

**Sweepstakes awards: In order to be eligible for debate sweeps, you must only be entered in debate events; to be eligible for speech sweeps, you must only be entered in speech events; to be eligible for overall sweepstakes, you must be entered in both speech and debate events.

We do not know if we have access to a student warm room this year, so please plan accordingly. Our campus gets very chilly at night.

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".

More tournament resources can be found here.
