    Information

    RULES, POLICIES, AND PROCEDURES

    All Event Information
The Glenbrooks is an invitational tournament. We reserve the right to refuse entry to any school to compete in the tournament or judges to cover a commitment for any reason. By registering entries for the tournament you agree to adhere to all tournament rules, policies, and procedures found on our tabroom website, in the tabroom disclaimer, and in the school permission form. As a condition of participation at the tournament, participants and schools agree to accept and abide by the decision of and consequences(s) determined by the tournament directors on any issues that arise during the tournament regardless of if there is a written rule or policy regarding the decision or consequence(s).
    Harassment/Bullying
Harassment/bullying of any sort will not be tolerated during the Glenbrooks tournament. Tournament administration reserves the right to disqualify a team or school if they are found to be engaging in bullying and/or harassing behavior.
    Equity Process
The Glenbrooks will have an equity process to hear and act on any concerns regarding equity and inclusion.
    Student/Parent Contact
We ask that only adult coaches contact the tournament. They will not be able to respond to student and/or parent inquiries.
    Competitive Format
All PF, LD, and policy rounds must have one winner and one loser.
    Outside assistance
Competitors should in no way accept or attempt to procure outside assistance during the course of a debate event. Any team or student found to be receiving coaching or other outside assistance during the course of said event will be disqualified at the discretion of the tournament.
    Judge Background Checks
All judges provided by schools to judge at this tournament must have completed a successful background check conducted by the school or district that provides the judge.
    Ballot Statement
We are all influenced by implicit bias, or the stereotypes that unconsciously affect our decisions. When judging, our implicit biases negatively impact students who are traditionally marginalized and disenfranchised. Before writing comments or making a decision, please take a moment to reflect on any biases that may impact your decision making process. Please remember that the video quality of a student’s performance or speech may be impacted by lighting, internet, access to equipment, and other family members’ presence in the home. To ensure a more equitable experience for our participants, please be sure your decision-making process and comments are related only to the content and quality of the presentation or speech itself.

    FEES/FINES
There are a few additional fees you need to be aware of:
Missing Judges: You will be charged $100 per round for every prelim round and $200 for every elim round one of your judges does not judge a round that person is supposed to.
Judge Name Fee: You will be charged $100 for needing to change the name of a judge, adding a judge, or dropping a judge in VCX, VLD, or VPF once pref and strikes sheets have become active. This policy is solely intended to make the sheets more accurate for students and easier to fill out.
Judge Constraint Fee: If you do not provide the correct information of which teams and/or specific contestants your judges cannot judge and we need to replace your judge as a result, we will charge you $100 per change in prelims and $200 per change in elims.

    JUDGE PHILOSOPHIES AND PREFERENCES
Like in prior years, we will offer a mutually preferred judging system in Varsity Policy and Varsity Lincoln-Douglas. We will offer a strike system in Public Forum. We hope to have preferences and strikes activated by the Tuesday morning prior to the tournament and they will be due by 7pm CT on the Friday before the tournament. All judge philosophies must be available on tabroom.com by Wednesday, November 10th at 5 pm CST. Failure to have a judge philosophy for all your judges may result in the tournament not honoring the preferences or strikes.

    JUDGE INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS
    • Because The Glenbrooks prides itself on the quality of the competitors and adjudicators, judges provided by the individual schools must be qualified to judge a national circuit forensics competition. Only persons who have graduated high school may judge, with the exception that high school varsity debaters may be used in novice policy. Judges must be designated for each division since the tournament will be held in multiple buildings.
    • Phone Numbers - We ask that you enter the correct phone numbers for all of your judges. You will not be able to enter a judge into the tournament without providing their phone number.
    • All policy and LD debate judges are required to submit a philosophy to tabroom.com by 5 pm Central Time November 9th. Schools that have judges who have not submitted their philosophies will not be allowed to submit a strike sheet. This is a self-reporting system – it is your responsibility to make sure the philosophy is published.
    • All debate judges are required to judge the first elimination round OR judge one round past the last elimination round in which their school participated (whichever comes last).
Please note that the number of rounds of commitment ONLY applies to preliminary rounds. As with other national bid tournaments, debate judges are beholden to the rule above regardless of preliminary commitment.
    • Placing judges in elimination rounds becomes more difficult each year because judges leave once their school’s competitors are eliminated from the tournament without fulfilling their commitment to adjudicate one round beyond their school’s last outround. You are responsible to make sure that judges are available to fulfill their ENTIRE judging commitment. We try our best to release individuals as quickly as possible, but the tournament requires the highest quality judging pool possible even after any particular school is finished competing. Schools that have judges that do not meet their elimination round obligation will be fined.
    • Given the need for LD and policy judges over the last several years, we are instituting an entourage rule for ALL categories of debate - LD, policy, and PF. Any adult at the tournament that is capable of judging must be in the pool for at least 2 rounds and available to judge elimination debates. If there is a reason someone needs an exception, this must be approved by the tournament. Please note that we will only know that you are present and need us to place a food order for you if you are in the judging pool.

NOVICE AND JV ELIGIBILITY – ALL DEBATE TYPES
    • The directors of the Glenbrooks cannot verify the experience of each individual entrant in our tournament, so it is incumbent upon individual coaches to ensure their students are entered in the right division.
    • Entrants found to be in violation of eligibility rules may be removed from the tournament at the Tournament Directors' discretion. There will be no refund of fees if schools violate these eligibility rules.
    • Please note that in order to compete in any division labeled, "novice," a student or students must be in their first year of debate. If they have debated in middle school they cannot be in this division.
    • Please note that in order to compete any division labeled, "junior varsity," a student or students must be in their first or second year of debate. Middle school years count as years of debate.

    ONLINE EVENT INFORMATION

    Online Platform
As mentioned on our main page, PF and LD are virtual this year. We hope to return to full in person in 2023.
The Glenbrooks will be using NSDA Campus as its online hosting platform. We feel confident its reliability, streamlined features and security protocols will result in a pleasant experience for all competitors.

    Room Check In
All participants will be required to virtually “check in” to their NSDA Campus rooms before the start of their event. These times are listed on schedules. Failure to check in may result in disqualification from the round at the discretion of the tournament. Check-in is where disclosure will also take place. Disclosure (in relevant events) must take place within five minutes of the designated check in time.
    Technology
We want to minimize the amount of technical glitches during the tournament. Therefore, we strongly encourage every debater to wear a headset with a mic. We also strongly encourage debaters to operate from ethernet connections instead of wifi.
It is the responsibility of each school attending the tournament to make sure the judges they hire for this tournament have working technology and adequate wifi to judge with their camera on.
If you encounter technical difficulties within the NSDA Campus system, you should email the help desk. We will provide an email address for technological help closer to the tournament.
    Cameras
All judges must have their cameras on when competitors are speaking and while giving their reasons for decision.. Competitors are strongly encouraged to have their cameras on.
    Coin flip procedures
The coin flip applies to all rounds in Public Forum and elimination rounds for Policy and LD. Sides must be chosen within five minutes of the coin flip. Tabroom.com will automatically flip a coin for the two teams where applicable. Before the round when teams are to report to their competition room for check-in, teams will be notified via text and email from Tabroom.com which team won the coin flip. In PF, the winner of the coin flip will c

    Entry Price

PF and parent is judging $105
PF and parent is OPTING OUT of judging $330

Each person in a PF/Policy/Duo team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF/Policy/Duo team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.

This tournaments requires judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
