Speech program will cover:
- Option 1:-Interpretation: Students should expect to have one interpretation piece ready for competition if picking from our library of scripts. Students are encouraged to bring their own literature ready for camp but are not required to do so. Students should be memorized and coached by the end of camp.
- Option 2-Platform: Students should expect to walk away with one completely edited and revised final speech ready for memorization for competition. Due to the nature of the event (choosing topic, brainstorming ideas, research, drafting, revisions, etc), and the variances in enrollment, we cannot ensure students will have a fully memorized speech ready for coaching during camp. As such this program is meant to help students get the writing done in order to get coaching at the start of the competitive season.
- Option 3- Extemporaneous Speaking/Limited Prep: Students in this program should expect to continue working on extemp or learning the basics of extemp in order to be able to give full speeches by the end of camp. Students in this program will do extemp speech drills where coaches will work on students performance and delivery along with improving student's research and analysis based on observations of students prior speeches at the start of the session.
Debate program will cover:
- Option 1: Public Forum: Due to the brevity of the program, this is meant more so for students looking to improve their skills as their primary focus over the summer without having to give up all of their summer in doing so. The focus of this program is doing debates and drills while also learning about new forms of argumentation (theory, kritiks, counterplans), while working on their debate skills related to critical thinking and decision making, improving partner communication, judge adaptation and word efficiency.
- Option 2: Lincoln Douglas: Just like our public forum program, the focus is more on debating and improving your general skills as opposed to working on the topic. Students in this program will be introduced to advanced arguments and improving their decisions making via exercises and debates on old topics while integrating new forms of argumentations and skills via lectures, exercises and debates.
