☻ Returning Student Advanced Elementary Class ☻
Dates:
21 January 2023 - 30 April 2023
@once a week on Sundays
8 students max per class
Class Description and Goal:
Advanced 1:
This is an advanced elementary course in public speaking and debate. Students who enroll in this class are expected to have taken at least 2 prior semesters (1 academic year) of speech and debate. The goal of this class is for all students to continue building upon their skills in speech and debate and further advance in platform, unprepared, and debate events in preparation for competitive middle school speech and debate classes when they reach 6th grade.
This class teaches both speech and debate and places an equal emphasis on both activities (50% Speech, 50% Debate). At this stage, students enrolling in this class should have solid foundations in both event types and are expected to perform at an advanced, competition-quality level. Throughout the semester, students will build upon their foundations and learn the following:
☻ Advanced techniques of Congressional Debate and potentially other debate events (spar, parliamentary debate, etc).
☻ Advanced-level evidence research, case writing, and reading comprehension. Evidence for Congress cases and facts for speeches will be expected to come from more rigorous sources (i.e. research universities, government organizations, credible news outlets and publications, and think tanks).
☻ Advanced techniques in public speaking (persuasion, logical reasoning, body language and stage presence)
☻ Advanced-level skills in argumentation and cross-examination
Advanced 2:
This is the second advanced elementary course in speech and debate. This class is the second part of the advanced curriculum for students who have already taken Advanced 1. Students who enroll in this class are expected to have taken at least 3 prior semesters (1.5 academic years) of speech and debate. The goal of this class is for all students to continue building upon their skills in speech and debate and further advance in platform, unprepared, and debate events in preparation for competitive middle school speech and debate classes.
This class teaches both speech and debate and places an equal emphasis on both activities (50% Speech, 50% Debate). At this stage, students enrolling in this class should have solid foundations in both event categories and are expected to perform at an advanced, competition-quality level. Throughout the semester, students will build upon their foundations and learn the following:
☻ Advanced techniques of Platform Speech (OO/OA/INFO/EXPOS), Interpretation Events (HI/DI/STORYTELLING), and SPAR debate.
☻ Advanced-level evidence research, case writing, argumentation, cross-examination and reading comprehension. Evidence for SPAR debates and facts for Platform speeches will be expected to come from more rigorous sources (i.e. research universities, government organizations, credible news outlets and publications, and think tanks).
☻ Advanced-level techniques in theatrical performance in Interpretation Events. Students will find and cut their own scripts to perform, and incorporate visual/physical performative skills in their respective Interpretation event.
☻ Advanced techniques in general public speaking (persuasion, logical reasoning, body language and stage presence).
Advanced 3:
In Advanced 3, students will enter class having been introduced to three Interpretation events, four Platform events, and two forms of debate. They will continue building upon their vast knowledge of speech and debate by learning two brand new Interpretation events (Prose and Poetry), the option to write and research a new Platform speech, and advanced lessons in Congressional debate. Students in this class will hone their research, writing, and theatrical skills to the highest extent possible at the elementary level. They will learn brand-new performance techniques such as how to use a speech Black Book (required in three Interp events), strengthen their argumentation skills, and familiarize themselves with sophisticated debate resolutions. Students will be expected to go through multiple stages of drafting, delivery practice, and tournament participation in Advanced 3. Students will leave this class fantastically prepared for the middle school speech and debate level!
*For Advanced 3 students interested in doing Prose or Poetry platform events, parents must buy a black book such as this before the second week of instruction (11 September 2022).
