    Dear Colleague,

Damien High School takes pride in extending this invitation to your team for our Third Annual Middle School Only Debate tournament. This year it will be a virtual tournament using Zoom. This tournament will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2020. We will offer Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum. We will offer 4 rounds of debate and appropriate awards. Our goal is to provide capable judging, competent tournament administration, and an enjoyable experience for those who participate.

Tab Room: We will have an experienced and fair tab room staff.

Forms: A chaperone form is included in this invitation and MUST be filled out by any and all students who are not accompanied by an authorized chaperone from the school the students attend. It is recommended that this form be turned in in advance of the tournament, because we will not allow any student without a chaperone to compete in the tournament.

Additionally, we expect all entries to complete in all rounds unless extreme conditions occur. We expect all entries to respect the integrity of the tournament.

All participants must currently be enrolled in Middle School (Grades 5-8). If we discover a participant is grade 9 or higher we will immediately remove the entry from the tournament.

    Event rules
Policy teams will debate the national resolution: Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.
Policy speaking times are 8 minute constructive, 5 minute rebuttal, 3 minute cross examination, and 5 minutes prep
Public Forum teams will debate the November/December resolution Resolved: The United States should adopt a declaratory nuclear policy of no first use.
Public forum speaking 4 minute constructive, 3 minute summary speech, 2 minute final focus, 3 minute cross fire, and 3 minutes prep time,.
Lincoln-Douglas debaters will debate the November/December resolution Resolved: The United States ought to provide a federal jobs guarantee.
    LD speaking times are 6 - 3 - 7 - 3 - 4 - 6 – 3 with 3 minutes prep. We will not predetermine an “LD style” Debaters should adapt to judge preferences.

    Adult supervision and judges
Each school must be accompanied by a qualified adult supervisor. No unaffiliated or unaccompanied entries will be permitted. For Virtual debate, your contact on tabroom.com should be an adult (not a high school student).  If we discover that your main content is not an adult we will remove the entire team from the tournament.

    Requirements
To be accepted, you must include an authorization letter from each set of parents or guardians. This letter can be found above the registration form. It is strongly suggested that these letters be turned in WAY BEFORE the day of the tournament. Any student lacking such permission will NOT be allowed to compete.

Protests:  All protests should be communicated to the tournament director as soon as possible. We will give all protests careful attention. Please use you best judgement on deciding whether to submit a protest.

Public Forum/Policy applicants must write a partner name or we can't enter you.

    JUDGE PROVISION
Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee. You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It takes two minutes.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments recommend judges to have a judge philosophy on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example (it doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up).
