    Information

Tournament AnnouncementThe National Speech and Debate Association of Vancouver proudly extends an invitation to your team for our 1st annual NYU Global Debate High School Invitational. NSDA Vancouver is excited to work with NYU as a sponsor to give students the opportunity to compete on the BIGGEST STAGE at elite universities. For more information about debating at NYU click HERE. NSDA Vancouver is committed to offering comprehensive tournaments that focus on competition, scholarship and access. To that end we have partnered with NYU to offer this exclusive opportunity.

This tournament will consist of three distinct parts: Admissions Workshop, Novice Teach-In and Competition. On Friday December 11, 2020 the Admissions Workshop will take place. Admissions advisors from New York University and the Director of the Global Debate Fund will join us to talk about debate, applications and admissions. On Sunday December 13, 2020 the Novice Teach-In will take place. NSDA Vancouver will spotlight three educators of distinction and ask them to share their perspective on debate. This teach-in will focus on the following skills and speech: cross-fire, rebuttals, final focus.

The invitational will be held online and take place on Saturday and Sunday December 12-13, 2020. We intend to offer middle school, novice, junior varsity and varsity divisions of Public Forum and speech events. Our goal is to provide access to speech and debate events, exposure to college preparation and capable judging. We look forward to digitally hosting you this holiday season.

At NSDA Vancouver our mission is to lift every voice through communication, critical thinking and dialogue to make a difference in the world. When we can effectively communicate, we can inspire others to do the same.

We are excited to provide programs for international competition and cross-border collaboration. This invitation is the first of many events we will hold throughout the year to provide students with competitive and development opportunities in a safe educational environment. This invitational is part of our B.R.I.D.G.E. Initiative which focuses on Building Research Influenced Debates and Growth Experiences (B.R.I.D.G.E.) for primary and secondary students in Canada and the United States.

Come visit, take a tour, get involved! Bring your energy and resources and find out how you can influence the world with NSDA Vancouver.

    Tournament Details

Platform: NSDA Campus - we will be using NSDA Campus to host our online events. If you have questions about NSDA Campus click the link.
Events: Public Forum, Dramatic Interpretation, Original Oratory, Declamation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking.

    Divisions:
Open - This division is open to all competitors. (All IE events are open to all competitors.)
JV - This division is reserved for people who are ineligible for novice but not experienced enough for Open. Students typically have at least a year of experience and at least three tournaments.
Novice - This division is for students who have debated a year or less. If you have debated for a year and attended three or more tournaments you are ineligible to compete in novice.
Middle School Open - This division for students in G6-8. Students that have debated for more than 1 year should be in this division. If you have a mixed partnership (student with more than a year of experience and a student with less) you have to be in Open.
Middle School Novice - This division is for G6-8. Students that have debated for less than 1 year are eligible to compete in the novice division.

    Topic:
Resolved: The United States should adopt a declaratory nuclear policy of no first use.

Public Forum Logistics: Tournament fees include workshop admission for JV and Open. Novice can pay an additional fee for entry to the workshop too. In the event of an event cap the workshop will be made available to all participants in the Open and JV division via our website and Youtube.

Novice Teach-In is a free skill workshop for your students. If you choose to “opt-out” just let GSA know by December 9th.

    PF Judging:
Our goal is to run this tournament single flighted.
If a judge fails to show up, you might cause the disqualification of the whole team.
Judge Disclosure and post round feedback: In an effort to increase the educational benefits of Public Forum, the tournament asks that judges disclose their decision and provide feedback for students. The current trend in Public Forum often leaves students wondering how they won or lost a debate. This is an effort to correct that.

    Speech Judging:
JUDGES SHOULD NOT DISCLOSE THEIR REASON FOR DECISIONS (RFD) DURING OR AFTER ROUNDS! Please write it down on the ballot.
All schools should attempt to properly cover their entries. Judging criteria are as follows:
    1. Demonstration of a depth and breadth of knowledge of the information/literature at hand.
    2. Understanding of effective “public address & interpretation” delivery, including, but not limited to volume, pitch, rate, articulation, clarity and involvement.
    3. Demonstration of an ability to determine and prioritize the importance of information provided in the preparation period in limited preparation events that includes Extemp, Expository, Radio Comm., Impromptu, etc.
    4. Demonstration of an ability to understand, follow and respect the time limits of their assigned judging event.

    Round Times:
    Speech Times are:
    4 Minute Constructive - Pro/Con
    1. minute Crossfire
    2. Minute Rebuttal - Pro/Con

Speech and Debate is about more than just competition but about how we learn to think about our experiences, our arguments, and how we learn to be conscious of one another. This year we want to offer a community experience to the younger generation of students through providing a Novice Teach-In.

This year we have a star studded cast of educators from throughout North America, they have taken the time to prepare short lessons, drills and activities for three (3) skill areas: cross fire, impact weighing, final focus.

    One Speech Event $60
    Two Speech Events $70
