    BERGEN COUNTY INVITATIONAL

    21 May 2022

    DEADLINE
    18 May 2022
    ELIGIBILITY
Open to middle and high school novice/JV PF students
    PLATFORM
Online through NSDA Campus or Zoom

    Information

    Zoom info
Everyone (competitors and judges) join this link at 9:30 am on Saturday. Rounds will be separated into breakout rooms. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9751230314

    Entries
Entries should be novice or JV. They should not have competed in any varsity tournaments, and should not have been debating for more than 1-2 years. For any clarifications on entries, please email Nadia and Victor.

    Judge Requirements
Every judge MUST have a paradigm.

    PF Procedure
    • Topic: Resolved: Japan should revise Article 9 of its Constitution to develop offensive military capabilities.
    • Coinflip: Will be done on tabroom after pairings come out. If there are any issues, email the given emails above. If teams debate each other again, they will flip again. To be clear, sides and order are NOT preset when teams debate each other for a second time.
    • Speech times: 4, 4, 3, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2
    • Prep time: 3 minutes
    • Tech time: 10 minutes. Once 10 minutes is up, the judge should email the above emails explaining the situation.
    • Forfeit: If debaters/teams are not in their zoom room up to 10 minutes after start time, they forfeit the round with L25s. If one debate does not show up, their partner can mav. The partner that did not show up will get the same speaks as the debater who did.
    • Speaks: Judges should factor BOTH strategic choices and presentation into their speaker points, with an emphasis on strategy/quality of debate. Personal biases and opinions may NOT influence speaker points. Speaks are given in increments of 0.1 and ties are allowed. The range should be between 26-30, with average speaks being approximately 28. Low-point wins are allowed.
    • Decisions: Judges MUST disclose their decision after the round (after submitting their ballot) and give at least verbal and preferably written feedback explaining their decision. Disclosing speaks is permitted but not mandatory.
    • We will probably be breaking to semis, (4 teams), depending on the number of entries. Win/loss ratio will determine which teams break, and speaks will break ties.

    Entry Price

PF and parent is judging $60
PF and parent is OPTING OUT OF judging $160

Each person in a PF/Policy/Duo team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF/Policy/Duo team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

Registration will not be complete until payment is received.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    Schedule

All times in Eastern Standard Time (EST)

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JPdeEPMV6yD1nc6ry_LOQxanGVtVE0po7Rrz7BclY1E/edit?usp=sharing

Drop fees will be the same amounts as the entry fee PLUS any fees the tournament charges us for late drops. Drop requests should be made to Victor and Nadia.

Please do not drop out last minute to avoid being charged these fees.

This tournament requires judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

First time judging? Click here to learn how to do it! Or watch our Youtube playlist here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.
