QUARRY LANE NOVICE 9TH GRADE FINALE

    Saturday, 3 May 2025
*if the tournament gets a large entry, the schedule might be extended to Sunday

    DEADLINE
    27 Apr 2025
    NO REFUNDS AFTER THIS DATE
    ELIGIBILITY
Open to novices and some JV only
    LOCATION
    Online through NSDA Campus/Google Meet

    Information

Welcome to the Quarry Lane 9th Grade / Novice Finale

This tournament is meant to be an end of semester "wrap up" tournament for 9th graders* and novices*. It's meant to showcase any improvement from end of semester to before camp in June.

The tournament is one day Saturday (May 3, 2025), meant to showcase skills gained during the offseason since their final tournament (for most programs, in March). If entries warrant it, we will expand those events to a second day (Sunday), but the goal is to just have some rounds rather than conclusively decide a single champion.

Hope to see everyone in early May!

    Eligibility Rules

    General
    • This tournament is open to all novice OR 9th grade students (who are not yet competing in varsity).
    • Novice is defined as your first year of competition in the event you are competing in. "First year" is defined first academic calendar year when began first competition, unless the student has not reached an elimination round, than the second year of competition.
    • 9th Grade is defined as 9th grade or younger. Varsity competitors who meet this description should sit this one out, but JV students may still compete.
    • Eligibility does carry over between debate events, but does not carry over from speech.
    • So a 10th-12th grader can join if this is their first year competing. A 6th-9th grader can join if they are in JV. But Varsity competitors of all ages may NOT join.

    Judge Rules

    All Judges
    (1) All judges must be 18+ in order to judge.
    (2) All online judges must have working technology to assure reliable and fast internet to ensure quality judging. For online judges, this include webcam, mic, video, and audio. This also includes a good and stable working environment (e.g. not while you are driving).

    Public Forum / Lincoln Douglas
    (1) In addition to everything under 'All Judges',
    (2) Judge training will be provided to the judges before the tournament and will be on the ballot. We welcome parent judges.
    (3) Tab Ratings will be used.

    Speech
    (1) In addition to everything under 'All Judges',
    (2) Judge training will be provided to the judges before the tournament and will be on the ballot. We welcome parent judges.
    (3) No strikes will be used.

    Online Policies

    Webcam Policy
Students: Since debate is a communication activity, webcams should be on during a debate. If that is not possible due to a strained internet connection, then at least the speaker’s webcam should be on while giving a speech. Only if turning on the webcam significantly compromises the audio of the speaker should it be left off. In general, there is an expectation that webcams are on while any debate competitor is speaking.
Judges: Judges must have webcams on while judging a round and a competitor is speaking except during minor/temporary internet disruptions. Note, this must be temporary, and cannot be for an entire debate or speech round.

    Help During Tournament

If you must speak to the Tournament Director or tabroom staff, please email our helpline.
    Subject line: [Division/Event - Room Number (e.g., VCX Room1, JVLD Room 2)]
In the email include the following:
    (1) Division/Event (e.g., NCX, JVCX, VLD, WSD, etc.),
    (2) Judge name,
    (3) Specific Issue (for example, Missing team - Quarry Lane AY (clarify which team is missing), Missing Judge - J. Smith, No one can hear anyone in room, Video not working in room, etc.)

    Judge Rooms

The tournament will not require judges to remain in an online room but all judges are expected to be “on-call” until all the rounds are started. If you are obligated and not initially placed in a round, please monitor your cell phone for a call or text message from tab just in case you are subbed into a debate (even after the posted start time, as you may have to replace a missing judge). If you do not respond or are not available to sub in when needed, then your school may be fined a missing judge penalty after an attempt is made to reach you.

    No Rogue Online Rooms
Under no circumstances is a judge or competitor to move a debate to an unapproved online space. If there are technical difficulties, then the judge and/or students should email @gmail.com immediately.

    Elimination Rounds
We'll use online coin flip procedures through tabrooom.

    Entry Price

PF and parent is judging $70
PF and parent is OPTING OUT OF judging $190

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

All times are Pacific Standard Time. Schedule is tentative. All events are single flighted. If entries warrant it, we will run additional debate rounds (prelims/elims) on Sunday for PF/LD, but the current plan is to just hold prelims in order to make the tournament one day.

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

    First time judging?
This is a great collection of short videos that one of the leagues have put together to learn each event: click here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.
Click here to find other training and official certification resources. Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
