NATIONAL INDIVIDUAL EVENTS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

    4-9 May 2021

    DEADLINE
    8 April 2021 (to register)
Asynchronous speech video deadline due on 24 April 2021
    PLATFORM
Online through Speechwire and Zoom (mixed synchronous and asynchronous)

    Information

We are proud to extend this invitation for you and your qualified students to participate in the 2021 National Individual Events Tournament of Champions. The NIETOC is committed to bringing the nation's best and brightest students and teachers together to participate in a high-caliber and high-quality national speech tournament. This event will provide renewal for teachers with guided workshops, networking opportunities with programs nationwide, and strategies for increasing student achievement. The NIETOC is designed to give competitors an amazing competitive experience, with a student-centered schedule, competitive costs, and minimal judge requirements.

As we all know, 2020 was anything but normal. Having to cancel our tournament was a very difficult decision for the entire board. And after being hopeful that we would be together in person for 2021, we realized that we would again have to delay seeing all of our NIETOC friends and family. As a result, our 2021 tournament will feature a combination of asynchronous and synchronous competition styles, in hopes of being able to accommodate a wide variety of virtual situations.

The entire NIETOC Board is hopeful that many of you are able to join us for what will be our 11th national tournament intended to celebrate, once again, the power of the spoken word and the resiliency of the speakers and coaches who continue to advocate for that power--in spite of a global pandemic. In the words of former NIETOC host and all-around great human, Kim Lenger, “Science will get us out of this, but ART will get us through it!”

Some of the key aspects of the 2021 competition include:
-Asynchronous competition for the three preliminary and octafinal rounds in all individual events
-Synchronous competition for the remaining elimination rounds in all individual events
-Students may triple enter in any combination of events.
-Fully-qualified 2020 competitors are eligible for the 2021 tournament. If students only had one bid for 2020, they will have to earn both bids for 2021 during the 20-21 season.
To confirm bid status, please check our website and the searchable bid recipient database:  http://nietoc.com/name-search/
ALL ENTRIES WILL INITIALLY BE ON THE WAITING LIST UNTIL VERIFICATION OF RESULTS IS CONFIRMED AND ACCEPTANCE IS GRANTED.

    QUALIFICATION
To qualify for this tournament, you must have three ranks from previous speech tournaments that equal or are less than 10.

A student must earn three “legs” which can be earned at NIETOC Bid or non-Bid tournaments that accumulate to a total ranking of 10 or less.

    To illustrate:
    Joe Smith’s DI ranks: 4th, 6th, 4th, 3rd, 8th
    Sarah Jones’ HI ranks: 4th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 12th

In this scenario, Joe’s best 3 tournaments result in a total of 11, while Sarah’s best 3 results in a total of 6. Thus, Sarah would qualify for consideration to NIETOC but Joe would not.

Please submit proof by completing the following steps:
    • For each student, we need a document with links to the specific tournament results listed on the website (such as SpeechWire, Tabroom, etc). Please compile all three pieces of verification for each entry into the same document and do this for each event you are competing in.
    • When uploading those documents, please name the files as follows: School Name-Student Last Name-Event for example, The Golden State Academy-Budiman-DI
    • Make sure the file is viewable by anyone who has the link,
    • Competitors will be placed on a waiting list until all supporting information can be confirmed.

    WORKS CITED
*Which events require Works Cited pages?
Informative, Oratory and POI. Students will need to create these digital files and then share a link with the coach, who adds that link to those entries prior to the registration deadline. This must be present in order for your ‘Piece Information’ confirmation to occur.

    PIECE INFORMATION
*Is selection info required at registration? Yes, please provide topics & titles and all other requested information upon registration. Not doing so will delay the entry in getting approved. If an entry is not yet approved, that is the first thing to check.

    JUDGING REQUIREMENTS
Because of the hybrid nature of our tournament, judges will be asked to participate in two ways:

1--ASYNCHRONOUS JUDGING: Our preliminary rounds and the octafinals will be judging asynchronously (via pre-recorded video) and will follow this approximate timeline:
*Prelim Rounds – Released morning of Tuesday, May 4th. Judges will have Tuesday and Wednesday to judge the rounds. Ballot return should occur by 7 pm CST on Wednesday, May 5th.
*Octafinal Rounds – Released morning of Thursday, May 6th. Ballot return should occur by 7 pm CST on that same day. This means judges will have flexibility for viewing asynchronous rounds, but must submit prior to the deadline(s) in order to avoid losing your team’s judge bond.

2--SYNCRONOUS JUDGING: Our final three elimination rounds will be judged live on SpeechWire via Zoom rooms at these specific times:
*Quarterfinal – Friday, May 7th at 6 pm CST
*Semifinal – Saturday, May 8th at 10 am CST
*Final – Saturday, May 8th at 4 pm CST
Judges for these live rounds must be available for the exact window during which each round will take place.

    Entry Price

    One speech event $200
    Two speech events $275
    Two speech events $350

If you are opting out of judging, you will pay an additional $100
Registration will not be complete until payment is received.
