    Rules

NSDA Unified Manual (Updated October 16, 2024)
    https://www.speechanddebate.org/high-school-unified-manual/

Please send questions about rules for each event before the start of the tournament if possible. The tournament director will have final authority on rules and enforcement.

    Speech
Competitors entered in Poetry and POI may use manuscripts, and they may be used as a prop. Novices may use manuscripts in all events.  Competitors entered in Informative may use visual aids in line with NSDA rules. In Extemp, questions will be taken from NFHS, NSDA, and other sources.

    Divisions
    Novice/Varsity
The Holiday Classic will adhere to the Wyoming definition of “novice”:

Novice Competitor Definition: A novice is a student who is in their first year of competition of their high school career. They will be considered novice for any October, November or December tournaments of their first season of high school competition. After Jan. 1 of any high school season, all competitors become varsity. A student will be considered varsity if they competed in any tournament in any portion of any previous high school competitive season.

Novices may enter Varsity divisions, but not the other way around. If one competitor in a partner event is Varsity, then the team must be entered in the Varsity division.

    Judging
This year we will be using e-ballots. All judges will require a device that can login to Tabroom.com to receive ballots for the Holiday Classic.

Descriptions of each event can be found here.

Click here to complete the mandatory Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

    First time judging?
This is a great collection of short videos that one of the leagues have put together to learn each event: click here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.
Click here to find other training and official certification resources. Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".
