    Information

    • NSDA PF April

    DIVISIONS
    We will offer three divisions:
    • Experienced junior high: any debaters in grades 5-8 who have a year or more of experience, or those with less experience who wish to debate in a more challenging pool. (That is, there is no restriction against newer teams in the “experienced” section.)
    • Novice junior high: any debaters in grades 5-8 who are in their first year of organized debate competition.
    • Saturday-Only: an open division for any debaters grades 5-8; this division will start and finish on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

    JUDGING
Judges can be any adult. They should at a minimum be familiar with the basic rules and time structure of Public Forum debate. New judges should be encouraged to:
    • Evaluate only the arguments as made in the round, avoiding inserting themselves into the debate
    • Pitch their feedback on the ballot to younger debaters who we hope will remain in the activity. Constructive feedback is absolutely essential for these students, but it should be articulated in terms of how students can improve moving forward, and avoid any cutting, sarcastic, or belittling comments.

    AWARDS
We will provide (by mail) handsome awards for all teams that advance to elimination rounds. Teams must provide a mailing address at which they would like to receive their awards as part of their registration. The instructions page for submitting this information is linked on our main Tabroom page.

    Entry Price

2-Day PF and parent is judging $110
2-Day PF and parent is OPTING OUT of judging $260

1-Day PF and parent is judging $90
1-Day PF and parent is OPTING OUT of judging $190

Missed round fine for judges: $200/round

Each person in a PF team would be responsible of providing their own judge, so one PF team would need to either provide two judges, both pay the judge fee, or one of each option.

Registration will not be complete until payment is received.

NOTE: We will charge set up fees if we have to create tabroom.com accounts for judges. It is recommended you do so on your own.

    Schedule - EST

    JUDGE PROVISION

Click here to complete the highly recommended Cultural Competency judge training course

Signing up a judge without having a Tabroom account will result in us charging you for the set up fee.
You can do this easily on your own by going to tabroom.com. It literally takes less than a minute.

    First time judging?
This is a great collection of short videos that one of the leagues have put together to learn each event: click here.
There are also these training cards available that include a summary of each event's rules and comments.
Click here to find other training and official certification resources. Or watch our Youtube playlist here.

Tournaments encourage judges to have a paradigm on their Tabroom account, which can be a few sentences on your preferences of debating styles, etc. See here for example. It doesn't need to be this long, but make sure to add something before you sign up. For example: "I am a parent, please speak clearly and slowly and avoid technical jargon".

More tournament resources can be found here.
